Juicing for Energy Before a Workout | Guest Post

Some people believe that if they want to get the most out of their weight loss or muscle-building session, they should avoid eating before they hit the gym. This belief stems from an understanding that the body will tap into the existing fat reserves that are present within your system if you don't provide it with fuel that it can burn through first. Though It's certainly true that some people can burn through calories faster when they enjoy a "fasted" workout, it's important to remember that most of the time your body will need some manner of fuel if you want to have enough energy for your workout in the first place. Remember that sometimes, exercising on an empty stomach can break down muscle tissue. Any weight-loss solution should always focus on burning fat and maintaining muscle, as muscle is what helps to boost your metabolism in the first place.

Fortunately, there may be a solution that allows you to get the best of both sides. Juicing and blending the correct produce and foods can be a great way to give your body the right minerals that it needs for a more effective workout. There are plenty of different types of foods that can be blended or juiced, including foods with complex carbohydrates that work to provide the base of your energy-producing fuel.
Here are some recipes to try when juicing for energy before a workout.
The Peach Cobbler Blend

If you're looking for a powerful pre-workout drink that just happens to be delicious too, then this could be the perfect solution for your pre-workout needs. The healthy dose of peaches will add sweetness to your juice, while you add oatmeal after the juicing session to ensure that it's nice and filling too. You're going to need some vanilla flavored whey protein powder for this recipe, along with plenty of sliced peaches too. Ingredients include:

  • 1 Scoop of vanilla whey protein
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 can of sliced peaches
  • 1 packet of instant oatmeal (blend in after juicing)

Simple Coconut Juice

With regular workouts and a busy lifestyle to contend with, the chances are that you don't have much time to spend in the kitchen each morning. Fortunately, this simple recipe makes the process of getting vitamins and nutrients into your system easier than ever. All you need is spirulina powder and coconut water. While coconut water is brimming with potassium to help you avoid cramps during your workout, spirulina is rich in protein, potassium, amino acids, B vitamins, and more.

You will need:
  • Coconut water
  • Half a teaspoon of spirulina powder

Apple, Beet, Carrot and Ginger

Most experts know that beetroot juice is a fantastic source of nitrate, which is excellent for widening the blood vessels and lower your blood pressure for greater blood flow. The more your blood is free to circulate around your body, the less chance you have of suffering from cramps, inflammation and discomfort both during and after your workout. This simple yet effective juice will help you to get the most of the various benefits of carrot, apples, and beets, along with a dose of spice from ginger too!

You will need:
  • 1 Tablespoon of freshly-squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 inches of fresh ginger
  • 1 green apple
  • 1 red apple
  • 2 large carrots
  • 3 beets

Green Workout Juice

Finally, if you're looking for a green juice to help you jump into the detoxing juice trend, this delicious blend will help you not only enjoy a more active and engaging workout, but it will also serve to detox your system so that you're less likely to suffer from illness and chronic pain that might prevent you from hitting the gym as regularly as you might like to. Today, plenty of people are turning to green juices to help them get the most vitamins and minerals possible without the fiber that comes in smoothies.

You will need:
  • 1 inch of ginger
  • 2 cups of baby spinach
  • 2 cups of romaine lettuce
  • 1 half a lemon
  • 2 ribs of celery
  • 1 green apple
  • 1 pear

Find your Ideal Juice

Remember that there are a range of different juicing solutions out there for pre-workout energy purposes, finding the right one for you is likely to be an experience that involves testing new ingredients and blends on a regular basis.

February Style Tone Unboxing!

I've recently discovered a Dutch beauty subscription box called StyleTone. If you don't know about them, be sure to read my last post here! In a nutshell, StyeTone every month the subscriber receives five full-sized beauty or skincare products, all of which are either cruelty-free or vegan. These items can range from makeup products like lipgloss and mascaras, to skincare items such as masks or scrubs, to makeup tools and accessories such as makeup brushes! I get super excited when my StyleTone box is delivered. Here's what I received in my subscription box for the month of February!

The very first item is a Supreme Eyeliner by Lord & Berry, valued at 18€.

Instead of a regular kohl or liquid eyeliner, this is shaped like a pencil liner but has a creamy texture and waterproof formula. The eyeliner has a metallic shine and a gorgeous colour called 'Smart Green'.

Next up, I received a gorgeous strobe cream by Emité, valued at 29€. This is in the shade 'Diamond Heart'.

What I like about this is that it suits all skin-tones, it's easy to blend with foundation or wear as just a highlighter, or a shimmery shadow. The product is a must-have as it's honestly so versatile.

The third product is a Manna Kadar Priming Lip Wand. Once again, this products suits every skin-tone.

The colour is beautiful too, and in the shade 'Joie'. Either apply it like a lip-liner for more definition or just add a wash of colour by wearing it as a lipstick, especially in Spring.

The fourth product is also by Manna Kadar and it's a lash primer. This is another must-have; if you have short eyelashes like I do, you'll love this product as it lengthens them.

The lash primer also protects your lashes from damage because you can use it as a conditioner when you sleep, and makes it easier to take mascara off. For 19,95€, it's the perfect weapon.

Finally, and also my favourite product. It's a coffee scrub! This one is from Nacomi - they're a company that produces products to those dedicated to a healthy lifestyle and specifically designed for people with allergies. Not only is it vegan, but the caffeine acts as an anti-oxidant. The scrub results in "a smoother and firmer skin through the dehydration of fat cells and the constriction of blood vessels." For all you coffee lovers, this body scrub is only 5,50€!

I loved this month's unboxing! Did you like it?

Valentine's Collab! Sugar & Spice

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! Whether you're celebrating it alone, with friends, with family or your significant other, just remember that Valentine's Day is a day meant for love and not just the romantic kind. Think about it this way; tons of beautiful flowers, reduced prices in candy and chocolate, stunning clothes as well as gorgeous Valentine's Makeup Looks. As usual, my annual Valentine's Day Collaboration is in full swing. Last year, I collaborated with Rebecca, Francoise and Lily, but this year I'm collaborating with Cephy (who you may know from previous collaborations), Deborah and Madeleine, who I did this collaboration with!

For this year's collaboration, the theme is Sugar and Spice. Madeleine and I had Sugar, so we both incorporated traditional Valentine's Day colours such as pinks and reds.  Cephy and Deborah chose Spice. Their looks are a little edgier and slightly sexier, but everyone's looks are wearable no matter the occasion - whether you're going on a date, girl's night out or staying in watching Netflix but still want to look cute, we've got you!

Cephy had Spice, and she created this gorgeous smokey-eyed look! How adorable is the choker?

High Tea Lunch Date | Lunchcafé Nieuwland ✰

My friend Lauren and I had created a bucket list together a few weeks ago. Our bucket list consists of thing to do in different cities of the Netherlands. We had activities planned for Den Haag, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Tilburg. Slowly but surely, we've been crossing things off. One of the things we had to do was go on a High Tea lunch date - both of us love tea and since I can never seem to finish a plate of food, bite sized snacks seemed like a perfect idea. I had been to a high tea before back in Cape Town at the 12 Apostles Hotel, so I was super excited to take a little trip down memory lane with a friend. I scoured the interwebs and came across Lunch Cafe Nieuwland in Tilburg, which is where we went for our high tea.

The venue was beautiful. Lauren and I both took a liking to the lighting and general atmosphere. I had previously visited Café Nieuwland but not for a high tea. A few days prior, I had made a reservation just in case, as I knew how busy it gets over weekends.
When we arrived, we were welcomed and seated immediately.

Lauren and I chose the Medium & More High Tea. In this selection, we were served savoury pies, two different kinds of sandwiches, oreo cheesecake, apple pie, scones with clotted cream and raspberry jam, two pots of tea (we chose ginger & lemon tea) all for just 36,50€.

The sign outside of the café was too adorable to not take a picture of.

 Very delicious sandwiches!

Savoury pies with cheese on a bed of rucola and cherry tomatoes

Scones with raspberry jam and clotted cream

My lovely friend, Lauren

A very delicious slice of Oreo Cheesecake

Ginger & Lemon Tea

Apple Pie!

After we finished our high tea, Lauren and I made conversation over our copious cups of ginger & lemon tea. Both of us were feeling extremely full; Lauren stated that she probably won't be eating for the next three days and I was  so tired from eating I even took a nap when I got home. The food was delicious and service was absolutely wonderful - a very big thank you to the staff!

Thanks for reading.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette | Review

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette has been on my wishlist ever since it was first released. My favourite youtubers were creating out of the world tutorials, Instagram makeup enthusiasts were uploading gorgeous swatches and the multiple different looks you could create using this palette was insaneThere was only one problem - the palette wasn't available in the Netherlands just yet and shipping basically cost my soul. That was until I discovered a website ( that ships ABH products from the United States here, certified on the ABH website, to the Netherlands. I was super pleased with the fact that the customer service was so helpful and that the delivery was so fast!

When I first unboxed the palette, my heart literally skipped a beat, I kid you not. The packaging is absolutely gorgeous; the palette comes in a baby pink box with Anastasia Beverly Hills engraved in the classic gold Italic font. When you take the palette out of the box, the texture of the actual container is velvet. I was super surprised and pleased at the same time as it just added to the luxury factor. There is a con with the packaging though, since it is velvet (and a light pink too) it'll get dirty a lot quicker. Something else that I adore is that the palette comes with a medium sized rectangular mirror - perfect for on the go or when traveling.

The palette contains fourteen warm tones. As said on the back of the palette "An essential eye shadow collection featuring 14 shades, including neutral and berry tones. Use Anastasia Beverly Hills first permanent palette, Modern Renaissance to create endless looks for daytime and evening." I definitely love that the palette has neutrals in it, and also variation in finishes as there are 3 shimmer shades and 11 matte colours.

I love that the colours are named after renaissance paintings and artists, so clever! The eyeshadows are also incredibly pigmented. I've used this palette three times now and let me tell you, for colours that are so pigmented, they're super easy to blend. I like the variety, from light browns to berry reds. The fact that the majority of the colours are matte is a huge plus for me, as I've been wanting to get a matte neutral palette for a while now. In my opinion, this is the perfect palette for autumn.

Top Row: Tempura, Golden Ochre, Veremeer, Buon Fresco, Antique Bronze, Love Letter, Cyprus Umber

Bottom Row: Raw Sienna, Burnt Orange, Primavera, Red Ochre, Venetian Red, Warm Taupe, Realgar

The Modern Renaissance Palette comes with a pretty dual-sided eyeshadow brush. One side is fluffy and excellent for blending whilst the other end is good for lid application. I think this was great to include and perhaps also a sneak peak into the new ABH brush line!

Overall Opinion
I adore this palette. I love the beautiful shadows and the fluffy double sided eyeshadow brush. The only con for me would be the velvety texture that covers the palette because it could get stained or dirty very quickly.  Since this is the very first (and permanent) ABH eyeshadow palette, there is no rush in purchasing one. I purchased mine for 54,95 euros (delivery included) and I think it's worth every cent.

What do you think about the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette? Is it something you'd purchase? Let me know in the comments!
